Explore the Wonder of Machu Picchu

Written by Abrar Zubair · 2 min read >

Enveloped by a dramatic landscape where the Andes meet the Amazon basin, the 15th-century citadel of Machu Picchu was built to perfection by the Incas. Explore this UNESCO World Heritage site on a private or small group tour, and discover its refined architecture, spiritual meaning and astronomical importance.

The site was created by the inca culture for religious observance, astronomical observation, royal retreat and a secret ceremonial city among other reasons. American explorer Hiram Bingham discovered it in 1911 and mistook it for the long-lost inca capital of vilcabamba, but its exact former use remains unknown.

Getting There
The ruins of Machu Picchu are situated in the mountains above Cusco, a town that was once the capital of the Inca Empire. Getting there requires a bit of planning and logistics, but it can be done.

Taking a train is the most popular and affordable way to get to the ruins of Machu Picchu, with two companies offering services, Peru Rail and Inca Rail. Both offer online ticket sales but they sell out quickly so it’s best to book in advance.

Another option is to catch a bus from the city of Cusco, or one from Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley. Both methods will take you to Santa Maria, a small town that is close to Machu Picchu.

From there, you can either continue by taxi or shared colectivo to Santa Teresa, a small town about 203 kilometers northwest of Cusco. From there, you can walk about three hours to Aguas Calientes or catch a shuttle bus that takes you to the ruins of Machu Picchu.

Getting Around
There are several ways to get around Machu Picchu Travel Package, but the most common is by train. The Peru Rail and Inca Rail train lines run daily from Poroy Station in Cusco to Aguas Calientes.

From here a shuttle bus takes you to the entrance of the Inca ruins at Machu Picchu Pueblo. It is a long day trip with an early start, so plan on staying at least one night in Aguas Calientes to break up the journey.

Another way to get to Machu Picchu is by trekking. While this is a more challenging option, it’s also one of the most rewarding. Trekkers will enjoy stunning landscapes, rare archaeological zones, endemic flora and fauna as well as the incredible ruins of Machu Picchu.

Hiking to Machu Picchu is a popular option for travelers, but it does require advance booking. If you’re looking for a less crowded experience, consider the Salkantay Trek. It’s a beautiful route through the Andes that passes through one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world.

Accommodations
There are many excellent options for accommodations in the Aguas Calientes town of Machu Picchu, the hub of activity where travelers arrive before heading to the famous ruins. From cheap backpacker rooms to luxury 5-star hotels, there is something for every travel budget.
